As part of the THRIVE one-day Climate Hub in Oxford, on 7 June 2025, CoHSAT led a session to consider what would be in a climate-friendly street.

A group of 30 people gathered in a room and proposed ideas that would reduce greenhouse gas emissions, or would mitigate the impacts of climate change that could be built into a typical residential street. Co-Chairs Hannah took notes and Robin attempted to draw things on a big whiteboard drawing of a street (with partial success and little artistic merit).

The street included:

  • Trees, vertical planting on the walls and ‘guerilla gardening’ areas
  • Planters and bollards to restrict traffic
  • Access to walking and cycling routes, and public green space
  • Solar panels, and light shaded materials to reflect light that can’t be harvested for energy
  • Cycle parking
  • Charging points for electric vehicles and car club
  • Accessible bus stops
  • Nesting boxes for swifts, bats and bugs
  • Rain gardens and rainwater collection
  • Community meeting, cafe, shop, repair and reuse centre.
